YOUth Review: The Tell-tale Heart by Edgar Allan Poe

The Tell-tale Heart by Edgar Allan Poe is an excellent horror and gothic fiction short story. There was a narrator that had not yet gone mad or insane and claimed that he was just nervous. He tells a story in order to prove his sanity. This man eventually kills an old man. He kills this old man because of his eye. During the week leading up to the old man’s death, he was never kinder to the old man. For seven nights, the man would watch the old man’s eye through the door. On the eighth night, the narrator woke up and he eventually killed the old man. It took the man so long to end up killing the man because he had to see the eye to kill him and on all the other nights he couldn’t see the eye. The narrator describes the old man as vulture-eyed. The narrator eventually does go insane.

I personally really like this short story by Edgar Allan Poe. Edgar Allan Poe is a good writer overall. This short story is written well and it has a good plot. It describes the setting well, has a good rising action, climax and falling action. If you are looking for something quick to read and you enjoy horror and gothic fiction, I would recommend this short story. I also feel like the characters are well described, although we don’t really have much information on the characters. I think that Edgar Allan Poe did a good job at hooking the reader at the beginning of the story.
