YOUth Review: The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo by Taylor Jenkins Reid

The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo by Taylor Jenkins Reid is a novel that follows Monique Grant, a journalist who is interviewing Old Hollywood star Evelyn Hugo for the magazine she works for, Vivant magazine. Evelyn reveals to Monique that she doesn’t want to give an interview to Vivant magazine but instead wants Monique to write and publish her life story, to which Monique agrees. The novel explores Evelyn’s life as a Hollywood star and the relationships she was in in her youth as she tells Monique about all the significant details of her life. Evelyn infamously had seven husbands throughout her life and the details of her marriages are explained by Evelyn to Monique. However, Monique doesn’t know that Evelyn picked her for the interview for a very specific reason.

I think The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo by Taylor Jenkins Reid is an absolutely incredible novel. I really enjoyed the dynamic between Evelyn and Monique and how they became more familiar with each other as the story progressed. I also enjoyed hearing about Evelyn’s life as the more I found out about Evelyn the more it made me understand her and relate to her in some aspects. I also enjoyed how Taylor Jenkins Reid describes the Old Hollywood setting in Evelyn’s life, her descriptions are very detailed and I think capture the atmosphere of Old Hollywood very well. Overall, I would recommend The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo by Taylor Jenkins Reid to anyone who enjoys novels about Hollywood-related historical fiction and likes character-driven novels.
