YOUth Review: The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue by V. E. Schwab

The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue is a fantasy novel by V. E. Schwab. It displays romance, magic, gods, and a hint of history, as the story follows a girl through time.

The novel begins in the 1700’s in small town in France. Addie is a young girl who longs to be able to follow her passion, but after being betrothed she fears her freedom will be took away. So, she decides to pray to every and all gods, even the ones who are forbidden. The only god to respond was the god that only answers after dark. Addie wishes for her freedom, which she gets but it’s a freedom in a way she never thought: no one will ever hold her down because no one will remember her, and she will live until the end of time. The story then follows Addie traversing the struggle and loneliness of being constantly forgotten and a god who just wants to see her give up. That is, until she ends up in New York and crosses paths with a boy named Henry. From there, the two must face their curses together.

The story was a roller coaster of emotions with so many twists and turns I never saw coming. The writer also did a great job swallowing you in the story and characters. The story jumps through time as well as perspectives. This unique use of story telling was interesting, but for the story it was essential to get the point across. Certain portions in the story however, specifically some of Henry’s part, did get a bit repetitive as it felt like they were being repeated multiple times but regardless, the story was still very good.

So to conclude, The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue was an amazing book with a unique story, well written characters, and a beautiful use of words. I would recommend any fantasy lover to read the story because by the first page you’ll be hooked.
