In Paula Chase's novel So Done, readers are invited into the world of Tai and Mila, two best friends navigating the complexities of transferring from middle school to high school and the challenges of growing up. Set in the vibrant neighbourhood of Meadowbrook, So Done explores the evolving dynamics of friendship and the journey of self-discovery.
At the heart of the story are Tai and Mila, whose friendship has always been unbreakable. However, as they finish middle school, they find themselves pulled in different directions, facing new experiences and confronting their identities. Chase skillfully captures the emotional rollercoaster of adolescence, portraying the girls' struggles with authenticity and empathy.
The characters in So Done are richly developed and relatable, each facing their trials and tribulations. Mila, with her passion for dance, is determined to escape Meadowbrook and pursue her dreams, while Tai grapples with family expectations and the pressure to conform. Their journey is both heartwarming and poignant, as they learn to navigate the challenges of adolescence while staying true to themselves.
Chase's writing is both accessible and engaging, drawing readers into the world of Meadowbrook with its colourful cast of characters and vivid descriptions. Through Tai and Mila's alternating perspectives, readers gain insight into their innermost thoughts and feelings, fostering a deeper connection with the characters and their experiences.
So Done is a powerful and timely novel that tackles themes of friendship, identity, and self-discovery with honesty and sensitivity. Paula Chase has crafted a compelling story that will resonate with readers of all ages, reminding us of the importance of staying true to ourselves and the bonds that hold us together, even as we grow and change.
While I enjoyed the flawless plot, characters, and well-described settling, I didn’t like the fact that it was left on a cliffhanger in terms of the girls’ love interests. Besides that, I do not think there is any reason to abandon this lovely read. Despite the incomplete plot, I would give this book a 4/5 rating. So, go ahead and read it!
