YOUth Review: Shatter Me by Tahereh Mafi

Shatter Me by Tahereh Mafi is a magnificent romance dystopian novel. Shatter Me has sold over a million copies and has been published in over 30 languages worldwide! Since its release in 2011, over the past few years, it’s gotten popular on social media. I can see what all the hype is about! If you are looking for a young adult, romance, or dystopian novel, this is it!

Tahereh Mafi's story is about Juliette. She has been imprisoned for nearly a year and her touch is lethal, but also powerful. The Reestablishment wants to use Juliette as a weapon for their advantage, but Juliette isn’t going down that easily. I like how Tahereh portrayed Juliette's thoughts she kept to herself; words with lines crossed over them and throughout the novel and series those words become less and less. I love the character development, it really makes you want to keep reading! I thoroughly enjoyed the bright and detailed personalities of the characters of Shatter Me. I’d have to say that my only criticism is the worldbuilding, it isn’t well explored and it isn’t anything completely original or exciting. With that aside, Tahereh’s style of writing is smooth and elegant and easily conveys feelings of emotions. The romance is good, but in the second book, it takes off! Honestly, Tahereh has a way of making words come to life. I could tell in Shatter Me, the sheer passion she had writing each word!

All in all, Shatter Me shattered my expectations. It fully delivered on a great level! It is a nice book to read if you are looking for a book to introduce you to the romance and dystopian genre of novels. Wonderful job, Tahereh Mafi 🙂
