YOUth Review: Scythe by Neal Shusterman

The book Scythe by Neal Shusterman is an engaging, fascinating, and thrilling sci-fi novel. This book demonstrates themes of the value of life, immorality, death, love, and loss. It is a dystopian story set in a utopian world. It is set in the future where humanity has conquered death, illness, and poverty. Due to the fact that nobody dies a natural death, a group of individuals known as scythes are tasked with controlling the population. In this book, there are two teenaged protagonists, Citra and Rowan. They are chosen to apprentice under a scythe, which is a role that neither wants. They must learn different methods of taking a life. Hence, the role of a scythe is a heavy burden. Both Rowan and Citra are compassionate and often put others before themselves. This is the reason why they are chosen to be apprentices. At first, the characters are strongly against becoming scythes, but eventually they learn to accept it.

The depth of Rowan, Citra, and the other characters in the novel encourages you to continue to keep on reading to learn more about their development. Also, Shusterman uses vivid and descriptive language to create this dystopian/utopian world. Thus, while reading, you feel as though you are a part of the story and you can easily envision the characters living and interacting in this world. I recommend this book to anyone who enjoys sci-fi and dystopian genre novels. The plot of this story is captivating and will always keep you on your toes. If you are looking for something different, I fully believe you will enjoy this novel.
