YOUth Review: Refugee by Alan Gratz

Refugee is an insightful, memorable, and such a great book! Refugee, by Alan Gratz, is a New York Times Bestseller and has won 14 state awards. If you are interested in learning more about refugees and their stories, then you may enjoy this book.

Alan Gratz has made his name writing many historically accurate, engaging stories of young people in the face of danger. I can see why many teachers love incorporating Alan Gratz’s books into their curriculum! Refugee has you on an emotional rollercoaster. Some parts of the books are sunny, yet quickly they can change into a storm. This book represents the real struggles of young refugees and their families. Josef, Isabel, and Mahmoud are all separated by decades, countries, and circumstances. They have one thing in common: being a refugee and fighting for their lives.  This book will keep you on your toes, wondering what happens next. Once you read this book you'll see that their three stories have connections that will bring them closer to each other. Alan Gratz’s characters are fictional but the events they went through are real. Through the lenses of Isabel, Mahmoud, and Josef, you can get a feel of what refugees go through, not in stories or newspapers but in real life.

Overall, I think Alan did a wonderful job on this novel. After reading this book I learned about how serious the problems of war are, forcing many people to flee their homes. In the end, refugees aren’t statistics or numbers, they are real people just like you and me. I highly recommend this book, go check it out for yourself!
