Projekt 1065 by Alan Gratz is a gripping World War II novel that kept me on the edge of my seat from start to finish. It is a New York Times Bestseller and describes in detail how life for Gratz was in concentration camps, but on a level that kids can understand.
The story is set in Nazi Germany and is about a 13-year-old boy named Michael O’Shaunessey, the ordinary son of an Irish diplomat working in Berlin. But…he’s actually a spy for the Allies! What makes this book so exciting is Michael’s double life. At school, he has to blend in with other German kids, which can be difficult because they all want to become soldiers for Hitler. But when he’s out of school, he’s involved in secret missions to gather important information to help the Allies win the war. My favourite part of the book is the book's climax, which is suspenseful, especially when Michael’s spy activities put him and his friends in danger.
The historical details are woven seamlessly into the plot, making it easy to learn about the time period while getting lost in Michael’s adventures. The book also explores important themes like bravery, friendship, and standing up for what’s right, even when it’s hard. One of the coolest things about Projekt 1065 is how it makes you think about what you would do in Michael’s shoes. Would you have the courage to fight for your beliefs, even if it meant risking everything?
Overall, Gratz does an amazing job creating a thrilling and educational story. Projekt 1065 is an excellent read for anyone who loves historical fiction or thrilling spy stories. I really recommend it!
