YOUth Review: My Lady Jane by Cynthia Hand, Brodi Ashton, and Jodi Meadows

Have you ever heard of Lady Jane Grey? No?! Became queen of England at 16, ruled for a whole 9 days, beheaded at 17 for high treason… still not ringing a bell?

Not to worry! I hadn’t heard of her either, until I read My Lady Jane, written by a trio of authors: Cynthia Hand, Brodi Ashton, and Jodi Meadows. This work of historical fiction, set in 16th century England, tells the kind-of-not-really true story of Lady Jane Grey and her cousin Edward, the king of England. When Jane, a 16-year book-lover is forced to marry a complete stranger (Sir Gifford Dudley, although he much prefers to simply be referred to as G), she is less than pleased. Especially when she finds out that her husband is a horse. Well… at least during the day (jury’s out on whether that particular addition to the narrative is entirely historically accurate). When she is named heir to the throne upon the death of her cousin, she finds herself caught in the middle of a treasonous web of secrets and lies, and it’s up to her, her husband, and Edward (oh, yeah, he’s not actually dead), along with a few friends made along the way, to ensure the rightful ruler once again sits on the throne of England.

I absolutely loved this book! Its laugh-out-loud humour and sarcastic characters made My Lady Jane a hilarious book filled with fast-paced action and plot twists. While the book is found in the Young Adult section of the library, it is equally appealing to not-so-young adults too! The book was originally recommended to me by both my aunt and (adult) cousin, who both thoroughly enjoyed the book. From historical fiction to fantasy, and from romance to powerful female heroines, this book has it all.
